*~* EXCERPT *~*
“Turn to Appearances, page 31.” Without more than a second’s time, she continued without reading her book. “And so you found that poor room dull,/Dark, hardly to your taste, my dear?/Its features seemed unbeautiful;/But this I know—‘twas there, not here,/You plighted troth to me, the word/Which—ask that poor room how it heard.
“And this rich room obtains your praise/Unqualified—so bright, so fair,/So all whereat perfection stays?/Aye, but remember—here, not there,/The other word was spoken!—Ask/This rich room how you dropped the mask!
“Browning uses the metaphor of a house again in this one, a structure of some kind with different rooms. And what’s the story with this house?”
“The guy likes one room but not the other.”
Quiet depth filled her eyes. “Why?” She turned, and her gaze caught a raised hand. “Mr. Hansen?”
“Because in one room he was trying to be something he wasn’t, and in the other, he dropped the mask.”
“And the first room, where he was wearing the mask was…?”
“Unbeautiful,” Susana said. “Dull and dark.”
Ms. Forester seemed lost in the thought. “And the second room? What was it like?”
“Unqualified,” someone down front said, “so bright, so fair.”
“He’s saying the same thing in both poems, is he not?” She turned on the toe of her boot and gazed at the whole of her students. “Be who you are. Drop the mask. Be brave enough to show the world, and far from losing yourself and being criticized like a finite clod, you may be immortalized like Shakespeare, or at the very least, the room you’re standing in might just seem a little brighter than the one where you were before.” Her attention jumped up to the clock. “Oh, look at the time. Be sure to read the last selections for Thursday’s class. See you then.”
It was like snapping awake from a dream and not being at all able to shake it. Jonathon stood as the others did as well. His mind spun trying to think of something, some reason that could keep him here with her for one more minute. He checked his things, gathering them slowly, watching her down front the whole time. One of the other students stepped up to her, and she bent to listen. What could he ask her? What question would be good enough to go to the front?

I LOVE romanes❣️IMO they are meant to be delicious deserts; this book, while sweet and tasty is not only that, but much, much more.It a a syllabus, of sorts, for a high school honors or college Literature course. It shares means and methods to think deeper when reading poems and prose. This author writes from a spiritual-psychological-intellectual POV. As another reviewer said, “it’s clean but not Christian.” Point taken. It is however a keeper if you’re a reader who’s done with heaving breasts and pulsing loins...this story clearly supports the opinion that it’s patient love, not quick sex that makes for abiding relationship.

If You Believed in Love A Contemporary Christian Romance Novel edition by Staci Stallings Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Both Elizabeth & Jonathon are hurting. He from the unexpected death of his wife. She is running away from a sordid past. They have hardened their hearts against letting others in. As a professor of English literature Elizabeth has the gift of bringing the novels & poetry alive for her students. This is evidenced in the nature of class discussion as the course progresses. Jonathon is the reluctant adult student auditing the class. He finds himself discovering changes in his perceptions of the characters in literary fiction. As he strives to adopt rules of "propriety" to win Elizabeth's heart, Jonathon builds bridges of trust.
I loved this story! When I read a novel I immerse myself in the story, sometimes becoming one or more of the characters. I have never taken a literature course such as Elizabeth taught in this book, and thus have not been accustomed to dissecting the story like was taught in Elizabeth's classes. It was like I was taking the course along with Jonathon and the rest of the students. It has changed the way I will approach and deal with reading future novels. Thank you, Staci Stallings; thank you, Elizabeth Forester; and thank you, Jonathon Danforth, for taking me through this most exquisite love story I have ever experienced. I have always believed in love, but I have never actually experienced it - only vicariously through Elizabeth and Jonathon. WOW!
Are unique perspective, interesting characters, wit, warmth, and charm. A wonderful teacher who improves your understanding of Browning and Austen. More than a parallel of pride and prejudice, well it gives a nod to the story it is a story of its own with its own Joys and hurdles. I appreciated the analogy of the room and store or use in life. I would love to take a class from Elizabeth.
I was a bit disappointed in the lack of spiritual development. The spiritual aspect of life was discussed fleetingly as one of the four dimensions of a story in life. There are opportunities that could have easily linked to further discussion of how that fits in with Christ and our Christian. There were a few prayers sprinkled into the story.
A story that will make you think, laugh, and wish you could give esp I ally Elizabeth a hug!
Enjoy
Elizabeth had a desolate past that caused her to escape into reading and the worlds of Jane Austen’s characters. She devoted herself to teaching and challenging students to look deeper into the poetry and books of a gentler time and relate them to life in the present day. Jonathon had experienced tremendous loss and spiraled into a hopeless depression. When he accepted the challenge of his twin sister to audit a literature class at the local college, it changed his life and opened his heart to a deeper love. Elizabeth was that teacher that all teachers strive to be with their students. In helping Jonathon, as he showed her what Love was, she was able to break free from her own past and the fears she lived with. Stallings showed how understanding the characters in the works of Browning and Austen strengthens understanding self and others. Far from being stuffy, these made the unfolding romance even better. She is a truly gifted writer. All of her books have a great message to tell and this one lives on long after reading the last romantic words.
If you like 'action' books, this is not the story for you. If you don't enjoy Jane Austen's writings, this isn't the book for you. This is a slow moving tale of a repressed college professor with seriously low self-esteem. It's also the story of a former corporate-raider who is in deep grief over the death of his wife. He is so paralyzed with grief that he barely leaves his apartment and his sister is extremely worried about him. She challenges him to audit the professor's class on Jane Austen books. The plot then delves DEEPLY into the characterizations of the characters from several of the books Austen wrote. During this process, they fall in love with each other. I didn't enjoy this book very much.
